What to do when you get a flat tire

Hey there, Kootenay Cody here, your friendly neighborhood family man and heavy duty mechanic from Nelson, BC. Today, I want to talk about something that's bound to happen to all of us at some point: getting a flat tire. Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "But Cody, I can just call a tow truck or AAA to come change my tire for me." And to that, I say, "Where's the fun in that?" Changing a flat tire is something anyone can do! Plus, it's cheaper, and let's be real, we all love saving a few bucks.

First things first, you're going to need a few tools:

  • A jack

  • A lug wrench

  • A spare tire

  • A tire pressure gauge

  • A flashlight (if you're changing your tire in the dark)

Step 1: Find a safe spot to change your tire. Make sure your car is in a well-lit area and on level ground. Turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers that you're changing your tire.

Step 2: Locate your spare tire, jack, and lug wrench in your vehicle. Make sure you know where they are before you need them!

Step 3: Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Turn them counterclockwise to loosen them.

Step 4: Use the jack to lift the car off the ground. Make sure the jack is securely in place before you start cranking it.

Step 5: Remove the flat tire and replace it with the spare. Put the lug nuts back on and tighten them by turning them clockwise. If you have a torque wrench you should torque your lug nuts as indicated for your vehicle. If you don't have one - be sure to see a mechanic to get them torqued.

Step 6: Lower the car back down to the ground and use the tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in the spare tire. Make sure it's at the correct pressure for your vehicle (you can find this information in your owner's manual or on the sidewall of the tire).

Step 7: Take your flat tire to a professional to get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

And there you have it, folks! You've just changed a flat tire like a true pro.
