How To Sharpen a Lawnmower Blade

Hey there fellow Nelsonites! It's your friendly neighborhood Kootenay Cody, and I've got a topic that's close to my heart: sharpening the blade of your lawnmower. Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "But Cody, I can just take my lawnmower to a professional to get the blade sharpened." And to that, I say, "Where's the fun in that?" Sharpening your own lawnmower blade is a rite of passage, a true test of manhood (or womanhood, for you strong, independent types out there). Plus, it's cheaper, and let's be real, we all love saving a few bucks.

First things first, you're going to need a few tools:

  • A file or a grinder

  • Safety goggles

  • Work gloves

  • A vice to hold the blade in place

Step 1: Remove the blade from the lawnmower. This will vary depending on the make and model of your lawnmower, so consult your owner's manual for instructions.

Step 2: Once the blade is removed, clamp it in a vice so that it's secure and won't move around while you're working on it.

Step 3: Put on your safety goggles and work gloves. This is important, folks! You don't want to be the one who loses an eye or a finger because you were too lazy to put on some protective gear.

Step 4: Using your file or grinder, start sharpening the blade. Make sure to maintain the original angle of the blade as you sharpen. This will ensure that it cuts evenly and doesn't damage your lawn.

Step 5: Check the blade for balance. You can do this by suspending the blade from a nail or a hook and seeing if it stays level. If it doesn't, use your file or grinder to remove a bit of metal from the heavier side until it's balanced.

Step 6: Reinstall the blade onto the lawnmower, making sure it's tight and secure.

And there you have it, folks! You've just sharpened your own lawnmower blade like a true pro. Now, go ahead and give your lawn a fresh cut, crack open a cold beer, and admire your handiwork. If you don't have a beer, a cold drink will do.

Keep those lawns looking sharp!
